As Heard on the Radio

I just finished reading your book, "Voice For Hire." It is excellent! Not only is it fun to read, It is also clean, to the point, and well organized. In my opinion, Its the best book out there when it comes to all aspects of a career in voice over. I have learned so much. I am pumped up and excited to follow the guidance and expertise that you and Peter Rofe’ have shared. As you know, I have been recording voice-overs for many years, but now I know that if I follow your suggestions and knowledge, I could be making hundreds.. even thousands… of more dollars. Ah! Just when I thought I had it all figured out!

Thank you for writing this! I have already contacted two of my friends who are getting work and told them that purchasing your book is a must if they really want to be the best that they can be in the industry.

Voice for Hire: A Review
by Stu Gray

The book: Voice For Hire by Randy Thomas and Peter Rofe

Whats the big idea: The First woman to voice the Academy awards, Emmy awards, and Tony Awards teams with Voice-over Coach and Producer to write the definitive book on the Voiceover Industry

The ONE BIG THING I got out of the book: The Voiceover Business takes hard work and dedication. It is extremely exciting, and there are many facets in which your voice career can go, yet you have to work at the business, keep at it, and really be up to date on all the aspects off the industry, at the top of your game, plus know about marketing, agents, home studios and more. This book covers all the things that someone needs to know about getting into VO.

If you can only read section - which one would you read: In this stage of my career, the section I would most recommend is section 2: Selling Yourself, which deals with demos, marketing yourself to potential voiceover buyers and landing and working with agents. This was great insight, and I have many notes from this section that I am going to put into practice right away!

Random Fact: 50th word on page 125? for

Cool Factor: Voice for Hire comes with a CD of a coaching session with Randy Thomas and Peter Rofe. Some great motivation and great coaching by Randy and Peter of some pretty terrific talents. The CD is an awesome added value to this book.

Another Cool Factor: Don LaFontaine. Before he passed, he wrote the intro to Voice for Hire, and there are many stories of him throughout the pages. I never met him, but love to hear of  ....

New Book Is a Guide to a Voice-Over Career
by Staff, Source: TVNEWSDAY, Dec 15 2008, 5:52 AM ET

A new book, Voice for Hire: Launch and Maintain a Lucrative Career in Voice-Overs, by Randy Thomas and Peter Rofé, provides a step-by-step tutorial aimed at both beginners and pros.

Along with specifics about the numerous areas of potential employment including commercials, promos, narration, audio books and new media, animation voicing, live announcing and trailers, the authors provide advice about how to approach each of these areas, including how to create a demo reel that producers will listen to, how to conduct a marketing campaign that will get you jobs and how to land work with an agent.

Readers will learn the building blocks of deconstructing copy and developing the right read. The authors use "real" copy throughout and highlight how to analyze it, bring it to life and sell the product without over-selling.

While the authors say they subscribe to the belief that there is no definitive right or wrong approach to the craft, throughout the book they share "need-to-know" trends and truths along with insightful comments and stories from top agents, casting directors, producers and other voice-over artists.

In addition, there are chapters on the audition, booking and recording processes; studios and the latest technology; guidelines from the pros on making it in the business; a glossary' and a 90-minute instructional CD.

Co-author Randy Thomas was the first woman to announce the national television broadcast of the Academy Awards and is the first person to announce the Oscars, the Tonys and the Emmys in the same year. She is currently the voice of Entertainment Tonight and The Insider. Author Peter Rofé is a trained stage actor who has voiced national TV and radio spots, network promos, audio books, cartoons and live events for the past 20 years. He owns PDR Voice-Over Coaching where he trains voice-over artists and also hosts industry workshops and conducts seminars.

"Voice for Hire offers insight from two of the most knowledgeable voice-over talent in the biz. It is a MUST READ for anyone who's interested in having the recession-proof career that voice-over offers. Before I was a voice over talent, I worked in "Corporate America." A number of my friends are losing their jobs right now, but as an independent contractor owning my own business, my business is actually growing!!"

"I highly recommend this book to anyone even slightly curious about the voice over industry. It is extremely informative and detailed yet wonderfully entertaining and interesting. Drawing from their many of years of experience in this field, Randy Thomas and Peter Rofé navigate through the dos and don'ts with intelligence, sensitivity and charm and provide the insight, details and perspectives that only those who have worked in this industry for many years can truly provide. Commentary from other successful voice-over actors adds beautifully to the various topics and underscores the value and importance of the advice imparted by these professionals. After reading Randy and Peter's book, I could not help but get excited about their profession and to feel fortunate to have benefited from their experiences. I have read several books on this topic but "VOICE FOR HIRE (How to Launch and Maintain A Lucrative Voice-Over Career) is by far the best I have read. It is, I believe, a must read for all of those who aspire to doing voice-over work professionally."

"Finally! I got my copy after ordering it from a local bookstore last week.  I'm really enjoying it and wanted to say "Thanks" because I feel more encouraged than ever before the book is a fun, easy read and I think the cd will be helpful too I'm saving it until last. The book is really helping me understand that I am more of a professional voice artist than I gave myself credit for I believe the book is giving me the confidence I'll need for auditions, making contacts and staying competitive!"
